Natural Options for Healthy Teeth, Tooth Pain, and Infection (Try These Teeth Remedies Before Heading to the Dentist)
Aaaaahhhh! The dreaded trip to the dentist! Even just going in for cleanings petrifies me. Does that happen to you too?
I'm a BIG wimp when it comes to pain--especially if that pain is in my mouth. How do I stop a tooth ache using herbs and essential oils? And what can a person to do to remedy tooth decay and pain naturally? Find out how to keep your teeth and mouth healthy using natural, gentle methods!
I'm a fan of going with natural/traditional tooth care before heading to the dentist for several reasons: Natural and traditional remedies have been proven to work over thousands of years, they are much less expensive than our current health and dental system, and they are not as likely to harm other systems of your body such as the micro biome of your gut.
We've been educated and scared into thinking the modern medical system is the only way to solve a health problem, and that the FDA knows everything. In reality, there are many harmful "legal" drugs (and mouth care products) being sold on the market that probably should not be available to the public because they are downright dangerous.
Due to the money-driven influences of Big Pharma and Big Government, many drugs and substances with major negative side effects are used daily by people on a widespread basis instead of focusing on natural remedies and cures, or better yet---prevention.
Luckily, there are natural things you can do to keep your teeth and mouth healthy right now. Try these natural tooth remedies for a bit and see if they work before going and spending tons of money at the dentist's office and potentially causing more issues with your teeth due to invasive procedures.
(A caveat: We love our dentist. She is skilled and does a great job. However, we've both had some very invasive things done to our mouths, and we would probably both have chosen not to go those routes if we had known better. Now we go natural first.)

How to Take Care of Your Teeth Naturally--Prevention
1) Diet:
You already know that sugars are terrible for your teeth. But did you know processed grains are just as bad? Or any refined carbohydrate? They create an acidic environment in your mouth, causing the breakdown of precious enamel. They also cause high glucose levels in your body, which weaken your bones and teeth.
Dr. Weston Price of the The Weston A. Price Foundation, was a famous dentist born in the mid-1800's. He studied cultures all over the world and discovered the people who were eating traditional diets had virtually no dental problems. His studies are now mainstream, but still, not too many people know much about what eating traditional foods means.
If you'd like a great place to start experimenting and learning about preparing and eating traditional foods, Sally Fallon's book, Nourishing Traditions, is an excellent place to start. It's not only interesting and well-written, but it contains tons of recipes relevant to making dietary changes that will help all parts of your body--including your teeth and mouth.
So what should you eat?
Raw fermented foods, bone broths, grass fed and finished meat, and organic vegetables and fruits provide our bodies with mineral-rich sources of nutrition. These types of foods also affect your bone health as well.
Using blackstrap molasses daily can also help! Just stir a tablespoon into your coffee or tea, use as a topping, or just swish it around in your mouth. It contains tons of calcium and magnesium, both of which are needed to help remineralize teeth and keep them strong.
2) Use Natural Tooth Powder/Paste
I wrote an article awhile back about the toxins found in our modern day toothpastes, and this even includes those tooth pastes touted as being "natural" on the commercial market. Here is the link if you'd like to know more about what chemicals are potentially in commercial toothpaste: Your Toothpaste Could be Killing You.
Putting all the poisonous chemicals in the above article aside, let's just focus on Fluoride for a moment. Most people don't have a clue that fluoride is toxic, and in fact hurts our teeth more than it helps. Toothpastes and treatments containing fluoride coat the tooth enamel, which is a living structure. Once it's coated, the tooth can't function naturally.
Alex Jones of "Prison Planet" often addresses the toxicity of fluoride in our country, and has mentioned that although changes are being made by government agencies, they are not happening quickly enough. Take a look at the documentary, Fluoride: Poison on Tap, for more information.
There are lots of natural tooth powder recipes out there, so you can easily make your own. Essentially, you want to be sure to include some salt, a mineral-rich powder or clay that contains calcium and phosphorous, and is on the alkaline side of the pH scale. If you include baking soda, you will create a tooth powder with a more basic pH.
If you want to find out how to make your own Calcium Carbonate to use in your toothpaste for remineralization or to take as a natural calcium supplement, here is the article!
NOTE: I know not everyone is into or has time for DIY, right?
Well, I found a great option! Oral Essentials creates natural tooth and mouth care products, including whitening products. They sent me this sample to see how I liked it----Well, I like this stuff so much I decided to add it here to help any of you who doesn't want to DIY!
BUT: If You DO Love DIY.....
Natural Tooth Powder Recipes
Recipe for Natural Tooth Powder #1:
2 Tbsp. Food Grade Bentonite Clay
2 Tbsp. Calcium Carbonate (Here's how to make your own from eggshells)
1 Tbsp. Myrrh Gum Powder
1 Tbsp. Baking Soda (Aluminum free)
30 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (or Tea Tree Essential Oil)
A good pinch of Sea Salt
Combine the ingredients and store in a glass jar. I just use a small Mason (jelly) jar.
Recipe for Natural Tooth Powder #2:
(This recipe is from Chris over at Joybilee Farm, who completely cured her daughter's teeth problems/decay using natural methods.)
3 Tbsp. Calcium Carbonate
2 Tbsp. Bentonite Clay (I always be sure to use food grade)
1/2 cup Baking Soda (You want aluminum free)
1/4 cup Himalayan salt ground in a spice grinder
1 tsp. Peppermint essential oil
10 drops Myrrh essential oil
10 drops Clove essential oil
This recipe makes a much greater amount of tooth powder than the first recipe. Just split it up between 2- or 4- ounce jelly jars, and each member of your family can have a personal jar. You can do the same thing with the first recipe too---Just double or triple it to make more.
3) Brush & Floss at Least Twice a Day:
The more your teeth are exposed to the minerals in the tooth powders, the more likely they will be to start the remineralization process. Ideally, you should brush after each meal, but that's not possible for everyone.
Flossing: I have to admit---I hate flossing my teeth. I can't stand it. So, I've turned to the Water Pik, and I LOVE it! A dental professional told me it's even better than flossing, so I do this at least once a day---but you should try to floss/water pik after brushing if you can.
Brush your tongue! There is a layer of bacteria coating your mouth, including the tongue and mucous membranes on the sides of your mouth. Be sure to brush these areas gently too.
What if You Have a Toothache? Natural Options for Tooth Pain/Infection
The reason I thought to write about this topic is that a friend of mine called me the other day asking for herbal remedies for a tooth infection she has going on. I gathered my supplies I had on hand and got them to her-- I thought this article might be helpful to you! Here are some remedies to try if you experience tooth pain:
1) Cloves and Clove Essential Oil
Cloves have been used for centuries in dental care. They provide an amazing numbing effect, and also have anti-microbial properties. You can use clove powder or essential oil. Just pack the powder on the part with pain or dab a drop or two of the essential oil on the area.
2) Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal draws out toxins from the area it is in contact with. To use charcoal, just add a bit of water to make a paste. Cover the sore/infected area with the paste and cover with gauze or cotton. Bite down gently and leave this on the tooth for 5 to 10 minutes. Do this two to three times a day if you can.
3) Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic remedy that is becoming more and more popular these days. Take a table spoon of healthy oil (like organic olive oil), and swish it around your mouth and through your teeth. Do this for 10 minutes.
Some people practice oil pulling daily instead of brushing their teeth. I personally have not done this, but I have a friend who swears by it!
4) Water Pik or Syringe
You can add a few drops of essential oil to your Water Pik water--Clove and Tea Tree are both good choices. If you don't have a Water Pik, you can use a large syringe to wash the gum line.
5) Herbal Mouth Wash for Healthy Gums, Mouth, & Teeth
I make an herbal mouth wash for Mr. V. and I to use. It's great for daily use too. The mouth wash kills bacteria and keeps the mouth clean.
Tincture these herbs: 2 parts Peppermint, 2 parts Plantain, 1 part Rosemary, 1/2 part Myrrh Gum Powder, and 1/4 part of Clove Buds. (I'll be writing a complete post on this tincture soon.)
Read here to find out how to make a tincture.
To use this mouth wash, just swish a mouthful around in your mouth for a couple of minutes. It tastes great too!
6) Salt Water Rinsing
Dissolve a tablespoon of sea salt in a cup of warm water. Rinse your mouth until the salt water is gone. The salt helps kill bacteria.
7) Vitamin C Powder
I haven't tried this remedy, but I hear it works. Just like the activated charcoal, pack a bit of paste made with the Vitamin C powder (mix with water first) onto the decayed area. Let sit for a few minutes.
8) Herbal Antibiotics
This one is probably my favorite. I tincture my own herbal antibiotics, and the ones I go to for bacterial infection include Golden Seal (or Oregon Grape Root) and Juniper Berry tinctures.
I take these orally whenever I feel like I'm coming down with a bacterial infection. I'll be writing an article specifically about the herbs I use and how to prepare them next week.
You can find out more about herbal tinctures and how to make one in this article.
Final Thoughts On Natural Tooth Care
The more I read about doctors, dentists, and modern health practices, the more I want to return to the old ways and traditional health. I have found that most of the time, if I am consistent with the remedy, I don't have to go visit a doctor or dentist.
I'm not saying you shouldn't go to your doctor or dentist---you need to use your own discretion. I am simply sharing my own opinion that often natural remedies are better, less invasive, and less damaging to our bodies.
