Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally! How I Lowered My High Cholesterol to Normal Limits
NOTE: In this article, I share my tips on how I’ve managed to lower my cholesterol naturally using herbs and holistic actions. I’m a certified aromatherapist and herbalist, as well as a homesteader interested in self-reliance. I lean on all these skills to work on my own and clients’ health needs holistically.

When I was a little girl, I remember visiting my grandparents, and every morning, they'd pull out their very large compartmentalized pill containers all organized for the week and take that morning's massive amount of medications. I was both repulsed and awed at the same time.
Being a child, I had to wonder why they weren't doing better and able to be more healthy and active given all those pills they were taking. Instead, to my young child’s mind, they weren’t looking all that great. Have you ever had similar thoughts?
And now that I know what I know, being an adult and having personally experienced side effects from medications I've taken blindly at a physician's well-meaning advice, I realize that my grandparents completely gave up their power over their own health. Unwittingly, of course.
I've heard this tale from so many. A person will start taking one medication, only to have to take yet another to deal with the side effects. And all of a sudden, they're taking handfuls of pills every day.
I am certainly not saying that people should never take prescription medications for serious health issues. However. I think we are WAY over-medicated as a society.
And I firmly believe that when you decide to blindly follow a doctor's advice without doing your own due diligence and research about what you are putting in your body, you are surrendering your power and freedom to make choices about your own body and health.
Some of these prescription meds have irreversible effects, after all. Don't you want to be aware of those potential problems and have some natural options?
I have mentioned my horrific experience with trying blood pressure medications per my doctor's advice previously in these articles: Eight Things to Do Every Day to Keep Your Heart Healthy Naturally and Eight Herbs to Use for Heart Health, so I won't go into that again. However, I do want to discuss statin drugs (used to lower cholesterol) for a second.
Part of the regimen my physician wanted to include in my beginning prescription repertoire many years ago (which lasted only six months I am relieved to say) was a statin drug to help bring down my cholesterol which at that time was 254 total. That's high, and according to my research, most physicians will immediately leap to medication at that point.
At the mention of taking a statin drug, I said "ABSOLUTELY NOT. I will never take a statin drug. Ever."
You can do some research on statin drugs, but I will just tell you they cause some really awful side effects and damage that you can't undo. I suggest doing your own research and then make an informed decision for yourself. Remember---I am not a doctor, after all. I’m an herbalist.
But this article is not about bashing statin drugs. It's about how I lowered my own cholesterol NATURALLY, without using prescription medications.

How I Lowered My Cholesterol Naturally
I have not taken medications for many years (about ten), ever since that brief six month time period of attempting to follow my doctor's advice based on scare tactics ("You will die if you don't take medication."). This includes all over-the-counter drugs as well as any prescription medications.
I was able to get my blood pressure down naturally by following my strategies in the links to the above articles, but my cholesterol still remained a mystery.
Recently I was contacted by a natural supplement company, New Health, with an offer to try their "Heart Savior" product in exchange for an honest review. I researched the ingredients, found out they are truly natural substances with proven benefits for the heart, and decided to accept their offer.
To be able to safely lower my cholesterol without the dangerous side effects of pharmaceutical medications sounded like a dream come true!
After all, what could it hurt, since my last cholesterol reading was 254? Very much in the "high" range.
I did not change any of my current behaviors in these past 30 days. I'm noting this because I want to let you know that the only variable I changed was adding the Heart Savior supplement to my current regimen.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I received two bottles of Heart Savior and a promise of remuneration in exchange for my honest review after using the product with integrity for 30 days. The experiences I share here are my own, and my personal opinions included are also completely my own. All of my comments reflect my actual results after using Heart Savior for 30 days.
Things I Noticed After Using Heart Savior for 30 Days:
1) More energy
After taking the Heart Savior supplement for about two weeks, I noticed that I had more energy. Not like a crazy caffeine kick, but it was definitely there. It wasn't a huge difference, but it was very noticeable when I gave it some thought.
2) Felt better overall
I have been dealing with a pounding heart on and off for quite some time. This is probably due to stress, but I have to tell you: It's not a comfortable feeling when you can actually feel your heart pound. Well....that has stopped completely.
Also, I just feel better overall. Maybe it's the Co-Q10 that's included in this supplement, which actively improves the action of the cell's powerhouse organelle, the mitochondria (middle school science fact), as well as strengthens the heart muscle, but I can unequivocally say that I feel better.
I'm breathing easier too! Even though I have not done anything different about exercise, I find I can climb hills and stairs more easily and with less breathlessness.
After using the product for two weeks, I actually bought my mom a bottle of Heart Savior for her birthday. I know that's a strange birthday present, but at that point, I was realizing a significant difference in my own health, so I thought I would give that gift to my mom, who also suffers from high cholesterol.
3) Actual test results!
Finally, I decided I had better get an actual cholesterol reading. So I took a home test yesterday. I am ecstatic to tell you that my reading was 172! Well within healthy and normal limits.
I was astounded! To go from a total cholesterol reading of 254 to 172 in 30 days is incredible! Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, my high reading of 254 was taken a few years ago, and I have not bothered to check it since. I feel that using Heart Savior these last 30 days has been a huge help, though!
So....in my opinion, this stuff worked for me, and it’s worth giving it a try if you’re concerned about your cholesterol levels and are not yet on medications. If you do happen to be on medications, please be sure to consult with your physician.
What are the Active Ingredients in Heart Savior? And Why Do They Work?
CoQ10:
CoQ10 has been studied for several years. It's found in every cell in our bodies and diminishes with age. Therefore, some people feel that supplementing with a quality source of CoQ10 may help with a variety of health issues. One of the areas CoQ10 is believed to improve significantly is heart health.
Selenium:
Selenium is a mineral found naturally in the soil and in some foods in small amounts. It is thought to play a role in keeping our hearts healthy by improving blood flow, acting as a strong anti-oxidant to keep cells from deteriorating, and by fighting inflammation.
You can get selenium from Brazil nuts, eggs, poultry, and sunflower seeds, but you have to eat quite a lot to get the heart benefits.
Guggul:
Guggal comes from the gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree native to India. It's been part of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and has been proven to have positive effects on the heart.
Guggul is used to improve hardening of the arteries, lowering cholesterol naturally, and may also help with arthritis and skin issues.
Policosonal:
Policosonal is included in a proprietary formula in Heart Savior. There is not a great deal of research at this time on policosonal, however, there is evidence that it may help improve cholesterol levels by helping liver function.
It comes from sugar cane, a traditional source of sugar. I want to mention, here, that Heart Savior is FREE from Glyphosate, one of the deadly compounds found in GMO foods. I was happy to hear this because this means that New Health sources their ingredients with the best health intentions for customers and high quality standards.
Inositol HexaNicotinate:
Inositol HexaNicotinate "releases a form of niacin when processed by the body." (Source) It helps with blood circulation issues and the resulting feeling of cold hands and leg pain from circulation problems. Among other things, it's been shown to enhance the width of blood vessels and reduce the fats (cholesterol) found in the blood.
Red Yeast Rice:
Red Yeast Rice is a Chinese supplement and culinary ingredient created by fermenting or culturing rice with strains of a certain kind of yeast, producing a substance that may be high in Monocolin K. This compound is actually one of the main constituents in at least one popular statin drug, and the FDA has stated that any red yeast rice with significant amounts of Monocolin K cannot be sold as a supplement in and of itself.
Hmmm....Could that be because....it's a natural compound and it works? You know, big Pharma and all. Just saying. I have that suspicious mind thing going, you know.
Phytosterols:
These are compounds found in the cell membranes of plants. The way they work in our own bodies is by blocking the absorption of cholesterol. These have been found to be effective in lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol in the bloodstream up to 14%!
"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has even approved a health claim on phytosterols, which states: 'Foods containing at least 0.65 gram per serving of vegetable oil plant sterol esters, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 1.3 grams, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.'" Final Thoughts About Using Heart Savior and Lowering Cholesterol
You know, most of the active ingredients found in this excellent supplement can be obtained from the drugstore.
I know quite a few people who try to create their own regimens for different ailments, however, it's such a hit and miss thing. Trying to figure out how much of this in proportion to how much of that is complex and requires scientific knowledge and lab experiments.
I'm a fan of natural health. I’m a strong advocate for using herbs and plant medicine for your health and healing. I'm also a fan of trying to use what others have learned in order to put the best things in my body.
Why play around with trying to lower your cholesterol with various natural methods and just choose instead to use a proven, trial-based product that optimally combines ingredients in a way that works!
I feel so blessed that New Health contacted me! Heart Savior is a product I'll be adding to my own regimen for heart health every single day. And no...I don't get free products any longer, and I'm not an affiliate for the company. I can simply personally attest to its effectiveness for myself. Heart Savior is a natural cholesterol lowering heart health supplement that works!
If you have heart issues, especially high cholesterol, give trying this product some thought! If you are debating whether or not to use a statin drug at this time, you owe it to yourself to try this first.
And..if you have loved ones who suffer from high cholesterol and heart issues, I can think of no better gift than to ask them to try natural methods first, and that would include Heart Savior. In fact, it turns out, I've discovered, that Heart Savior is doctor-formulated and more and more doctors are recommending this product!
You know, I'm reading this book right now called The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell. It's fascinating. But one thing that stands out is the Danish belief in using natural methods to solve health issues before turning to prescriptions. I think here, in America, we need to collectively start thinking like Danes in the area of our health.
What do you think? This is one of those areas where everyone has an opinion, and I'm sure I may have stepped on some toes. And maybe not. Either way, I hope you'll leave a comment in the comments section!
Hugs, Health, & Self-Reliance,
Heidi
