In this article, I share my favorite essential oils to use in the Fall for scenting your home naturally and adding health benefits at the same time! You’ll love these Fall essential oil blends for your diffuser. Delight in the scents of Autumn and enjoy a bit of cozy living and Fall Hygge!
Oh, my friend! Fall is here at last!
With the brisk, cooling temperatures, leaves shedding their summer green for beautiful hues of gold, orange, yellow, and red, and the scent of fire places and wood burning stoves starting back up again (especially here in the North)….I bet you’re like me! Do you yearn for the scents of Fall in your home too?
Well, I’ve got some fresh, Fall ways you can scent your home!
But what kind of scents?
Toxic commercial candles scented with carcinogenic fragrance oils? Or those noxious and toxic room sprays? Or air fresheners that make you feel kind of sick, even if you (sort of) enjoy the scent?
This Fall season, how about trying some natural autumn scented essential oils, either in a diffuser or a spray?
It’s SO easy to use essential oils for the scent and freshness of your home, and these natural fragrances come from pure plant sources, especially if you know criteria for choosing a quality company (and there are many good companies).
I’ve made a list of my favorite Fall singles you can use alone or mix and match for some delicious Fall scents. I’ve also included some of my favorite Fall essential oil blends for you too!

Essential Oils to Use This Fall for Scenting Your Home and Adding Health Benefits Too!
Once you begin using essential oils in your home, whether it’s for cleaning, health reasons, or just pure enjoyment, you won’t want to go back to artificial fragrances with their dubious effects on your health. I promise.
You’ll feel the difference right away, and you won’t even want to go near an artificial chemically laden air freshener.
Besides this, scent has a lot to do with our emotions. They can evoke pleasant memories, like your grandma’s sugar cookies…. or that apple pie your mama used to make. Besides baking scents, warm spicy and pine scents just say, “Fall is here.”
I’ve compiled some great Fall essential oil choices for you to diffuse or create your own room sprays. You’ll save money, be healthier, and your home will smell fabulous!
The blends below the single oils can also be used in your herbal and natural handmade soaps and herbal salves, oils, butters, and balms too!
These essential oils are all reminiscent of Fall baking, falling leaves, and holiday spices. They are warming, soothing, and just make you feel happy and wonderful. This is Fall Hygge at it’s finest, if you ask me!
Spicy Essential Oil Singles for Fall
One note about using the spicy essential oils. These are generally “hot” oils, and they can cause skin irritation. Also, if they are diffused too strongly or for too long, they may irritate the mucous membranes. Diffuse these for up to 30 minutes at a time a few times a day.
I love to take one to three of the warm spicy scents in smaller amounts and blend them with a somewhat larger amount of orange or another citrus for some dilution (and because they go so well together). They also blend well with the woodsy scents.
I’ve got some of my favorite blends for you below too!
Here are my favorite spicy single essential oils for Autumn:
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a wonderful scent that most of us just love. Popular in baking pastries and sweets, the scent is homey too. Besides just how darn good cinnamon essential oil smells in your home, it has some exceptional immune boosting powers too. It’s also thought to be an aphrodisiac for men, and possibly women too! :-)
Clove
Like cinnamon, clove essential oil adds a pungent, woody spice scent and is also often used in baked goods and fall products that call for pumpkin pie spice type spices.
Also like cinnamon, clove essential oil helps strengthen the immune system! It’s one of the spices the Four Thieves used to stay well during the plague in Europe centuries ago.
Wait! You don’t know the story? Well, I’ve got it for you farther along in the article, so keep reading!
Nutmeg
Nutmeg, in my opinion, is one of the “warmest” smelling of these Fall single essential oils. Nutmeg helps improve the function of the brain as well as detoxifying the body. Besides that, it smells just divine—warm and nutty.
Ginger
We all know about ginger! It’s got so many uses! I love keeping a Ginger Bug going in my kitchen for creating natural sodas that are actually healthy! But did you know ginger essential oil has some pretty amazing benefits too?
Ginger essential oil helps relieve stressful feelings, is a great antioxidant, and adds a warmth to your essential oil blends.
Cardamom
Cardamom is a popular spice for cooking as well. Besides this, its spicy pungent aroma is a wonderful addition to any Fall spice blend you create. It’s not one of the “main players,” but a drop or two will give your essential oil blends a new dimension.
Cardamom is also believed to be a wonderful antioxidant, great for digestion, and a good immune booster.
Citrus Essential Oils for Scenting Your Home in the Fall
Citrus essential oils are bright, summery, uplifting, happy, and refreshing. Citrus essential oils are known for their mood-enhancing properties. Alone, these are not really Fall inspired essential oils. However, citrus scents are wonderful for using in your Fall blends because of how well they go with the warming spicy essential oils.
Just add one or two citrus scents and balance them lightly with two or three of the spicy essential oils.
LOVE!
Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, and Lemon are all some of my favorites to play around with in the Fall.
The tangerine is especially helpful for improving your mood. The mandarin essential oil is calming and soothing for children (and adults too). Lemon and orange essential oils are incredibly good for helping boost your immune system health.
Woodsy Essential Oils for Fall
The Woodsy essential oils are generally reminders of the winter holiday seasons, however, they do have their place in Fall blends, or even by themselves. I personally think they are wonderful all year round, but especially as the temperatures cool down—-evergreen is so comforting.
Pine, White Fir, Juniper, Frankincense, and Cypress are all among my favorite woodsy Fall essential oils to use.
Essential Oils for Fall Health
Have you heard the famous folk tale of the Four Thieves?
This is a pretty famous story that has been retold for some time now. Here it is:
As legend has it, during the dreaded time of the great plague that killed over 2/3 of the European population many centuries ago, most folks were staying as far from the cities as they could (if they could). You see, these very populated areas were deadly places, with dead bodies being burned in the streets, or even left in a pile.
Can you imagine the germs?
Unfortunately, not everyone was wealthy enough or fast enough to get away to the countryside. And even if they were, they often brought this deadly virus with them.
Anyhow, there were four grave robbers who regularly came into contact with the dead corpses as they were busy robbing them. Day after day, week after week, these four robbers stole from the bodies of the dead. And….they never fell ill!
Finally, when they were caught and brought before the magistrate for their punishment, the judge bargained with them, “If you tell me your secret to not falling sick, I will let you go.”
Turns, out (as legend has it) the four thieves were using some combination of cloves, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary essential oils or extractives. One of them was an alchemist and knew how to create these powerful extracts and blend them for boosting the immune system and helping kill the virus!
Isn’t that amazing?
Honestly, I don’t know how true that tale is, BUT you can’t deny that you will find these essential oils (all or in part) in almost every immune-enhancing essential oil blend you’ll come across.
Coincidence? I don’t think so.
I have found great success diffusing these essential oils in my classroom and my home for helping keep us healthy and well during the cold and flu season!

Final Thoughts on Using Essential Oils to Scent Your Home and Make it Cozy This Fall….Scent for Fall Hygge
I do love using essential oils.
Are you wondering where you can find quality essential oils that won’t kill your bank account? I know that’s a problem I have sometimes. Here are my favorite places to purchase my essential oils for using in my home:
Rocky Mountain Oils has an excellent reputation and a fine history. They are a little on the pricey side, but not nearly as expensive as the popular multi-level marketing companies that sell essential oils. I would definitely say they are on par quality-wise with these companies (DoTerra and Young Living). Rocky Mountain Oils also has a wonderful Fall line up of pre-made blends you can use too!
Plant Therapy is another of my favorites. They have good quality essential oils at a steeper discount than RMO. However, you’ll have to compare to see how they stack up for you. I have personally used several of their blends with excellent results.
And like Rocky Mountain Oils, they have a nice Fall line up of blends. Another great thing about Plant Therapy is they have a fabulous Kid Safe line of essential oils too.
Finally, Starwest Botanicals carries some quality essential oils in a number of different quantities. I use their essential oils in my soap making and also for any body care products, like salves, that require a higher amount of essential oil.
And, I’ll be honest: I still love DoTerra’s essential oils. I use them often. I carry all kinds of brands of essential oils in my home, and the essential oils from these three companies are my favorites!
I hope you enjoy playing around with using essential oils to scent your home this Fall season! I know I sure do, and I get compliments on how my home smells all the time! :-)
