Sinus Congestion Roller Bottle Recipes with Essential Oils Safe for Kids and Adults

UGH! For many of us, it’s time for seasonal springtime and summer allergies, and we all know what this brings! Sinus drainage, stuffy nose, sinus headache, even cough and runny eyes! Once in awhile, these even turn into a sinus infection. The solution? Essential oils to the rescue! Here are two great recipes that can help. One is very powerful, meant for adults. The other is gentle yet effective, meant for kids. Enjoy!

Sinus congestion, whether from allergies or a bad cold, is NOT fun. It’s tough when you can’t breathe! I’ve got quite a few decongestant options up my natural living and life sleeve, such as my No-Fail Natural Decongestant, my Mullein & Marshmallow Tincture, and how to deal with allergies.

This time around, I’m sharing a two recipes for essential oil blends and how to make a safe and proper essential oil roll-on for sinus congestion for both kids and adults.

One of my friends asked me if I could make a safe blend for her five-year-old daughter that would help with green mucous that’s stuck so she can breathe better between herbal steams (which are highly effective as well).

My friend told me she had heard that eucalyptus essential oil isn’t safe for children…but this isn’t the whole story. I explained to her that it’s all about the species of the eucalyptus plant and also the chemistry in the essential oil.

So, I created a great sinus-supporting recipe blend for kids. I also made a great decongestant blend for adults, too. You can find them right here!

But First, What to Know About Diluting Your Essential Oils Safely for Children

In my digital book, The Ultimate Essential Oil Reference Guide for Safety and Dilutions, I share very in-depth guidelines for using essential oils safely with children, as well as all populations of people (infants, elders, those on medications, pregnant/nursing, and even pets).

There’s SO much misinformation out there, it makes me cringe, to be honest. I’ve seen some VERY dangerous recipes and remedies online, and frankly, it scares me for people who take everything they read online as truth.

As a certified professional level aromatherapist, I have learned and experienced how vital it is for you to use essential oils safely. Just as with herbs, you need to have some knowledge and do your research so you don’t accidentally hurt someone.

So, for kids, you have to realize their systems are SO much smaller than our adult ones; and the younger the child, the more careful you have to be. Essentially, you have infants & toddlers (under two); children ages 2-6; and children 7-12.

Over the age of 12, young people can generally use adult dilutions, depending on their actual size.

Essential oils should always be diluted, and even essential oils high in certain compounds that are unsafe for children like menthol, can be used in very small dilutions depending on the need and the age of the child.

For acute issues, like the green congestion my friend’s child is experiencing, a 2-3% dilution is fine used on smaller areas. And, once again, herbal aromatic steams are SO helpful for green, stuck mucus.

Essential oil safety is a BIG topic, and if you’re interested in using your essential oils well and responsibly, take a look at my new eBook, The Ultimate Essential Oil Safety and Reference Guide, which contains several dilution charts and information for different populations of people as well as pets. I’ve also included a very handy cheat sheet!

Now, you might be wondering:

Why are Some Essential Oils Not Safe for Kids?

It’s all about the chemical composition of the essential oils. It’s also the chemistry that makes the essential oils therapeutic in so many ways.

I know some people “poo-poo” essential oils as just some nice-smelling fun or worse, some New Age magic, but the reality is that essential oils are filled with chemicals that can be extremely helpful when used skillfully.

Eucalyptus is a great example!

What’s the Difference Between Eucalyptus dives and Eucalyptus globulus?

It’s all about a chemical called 1,8 cineole. This is a chemical that’s responsible for helping to open sinus passages and support respiration. The issue with it for children is that because it’s very strong, it can actually have an opposite effect on the very young or those prone to asthma. Therefore, essential oils containing this chemical should be used cautiously.

Eucalyptus globulus is the most common eucalyptus, and it’s also very high in 1,8 cineole! Eucalyptus dives is a softer, gentler species of eucalyptus that’s more suitable for young children because it doesn’t contain the very high amounts of 1,8 cineole that E. globulus does, yet it’s still helpful.

Eucalyptus dives contains about 1% 1,8 cineole; while E. globulus contains upwards of 60% of the same chemical. You can see that safe essential oil use is all about the chemistry.
