How to Make a Love Potion That Works Using Essential Oils

NOTE: This article is about creating powerful essential oils that work through the proven science of aromatherapy to make a love potion blend that can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause some serious love magic!

There’s nothing “woo-woo” or New Age about using essential oils to create an effective love potion blend that really works! No, you don’t have to dance naked under the stars or read your astrological forecast or understand plant spirits…. Essential oils are scientifically proven to work through the chemistry of the volatile oils of the plants.

You might be wondering, “How on earth do essential oils work for love?”

Aphrodisiacs, natural ones anyway, work in a variety of ways. They might enhance and uplift the mood, for example. Or they may relax a person with anxiety. Often, essential oils can aromatically set the tone for self-care and also intimacy with your partner.

Cinnamon essential oil, for example, has been studied and found to be relatively effective, especially for men, to enhance the atmosphere. Ylang ylang essential oil contains a chemical compound called indole which not only has many therapeutic benefits but also supports reproductive function via the mood as well as physically. There are many essential oils that affect our feelings of love for another, and even ourselves in the case of self-care.

I’ll be discussing this more below…..

Famous Beauties Who Used Natural Fragrances and Essential Oils for Attraction

It’s a fact that many women skillfully have used the power of aromatherapy throughout all the centuries of history to get a man to fall madly in love with them. From common women of olden times to the very famous, and now in our modern times, fragrance has reached a pinnacle.

Here are some examples of some famous women who relied on essential oils for attraction:

Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt

We all know about Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt! She was known as the most beautiful woman in the world, and she had many love tricks up her sleeve. One of these very important factors in her success at getting Julius Caesar to fall in love with her was using scent—-specifically herbal infused oils and perhaps even essential oils.

It’s said that her servants filled her boat with fragrant plants that not only beautifully decorated her boat but also caused the scent to waft around her provocatively. Her favorite scents would probably have been jasmine, myrrh, frankincense, neroli, and rose; and her faithful maidens who served her made sure these scents were front and center wherever Cleopatra went.

Helen of Troy

The ancient Greeks used plant oils to help “heal evil humors,” or sicknesses in the body. Scented herbal infused oils and perhaps even certain essential oils that could be distilled at that time were used not only for healing but for perfumery. Helen of Troy was so beautiful she even started a war!

Princess Anne Marie Orsini

This beautiful Italian princess who scented her gloves in the 17th century with neroli oil. Neroli oil comes from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, and is beautifully scented. Legend has it that when gentlemen leaned down to kiss her hands, they were immediately under the spell of her seduction.

Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte

Both the Empress Josephine of 18th century France and her husband Napoleon Bonaparte are known to have used essential oils extensively to lure each other. Napoleon used gallons of rosemary oil and infused waters for scent. Josephine is reported to have grown her own roses and oversee the distillation of her special rose oils, which she used extensively for beauty and scent.

The Science of Why Essential Oils Work as Love Potion Ingredients

Essential oils are the volatile oils that only some plants contain. These special oils aren’t actually “oils” at all. An oil is a lipid, while an essential oil is made of volatile chemicals that evaporate quickly but contain high levels of scent.

The molecules in many essential oils are so tiny they can actually cross the blood-brain barrier! They quickly affect the limbic system of the brain (our emotional center). When we breathe them in, they enter the bloodstream through the lungs. In fact, researchers have performed studies on how long different essential oil molecules actually last in the blood!

Essential oils have the power to calm, soothe, relax, energize, and create emotion in humans and animals. They have a strong effect on behaviors, moods, and how a person feels about another. In fact, they can possibly even influence certain hormone release.

Properties of the Essential Oils Used in Love Potions that Work

Many essential oils can be used to create love potions in these modern times. And they also have various properties. It’s these actions that you need to consider when choosing your essential oils for your own love potion.

Relaxants:

Love can sometimes cause anxiety! Therefore, it’s a good idea to include an essential oil or two that can calm and soothe the stress response. A relaxed lover is a happy lover, after all. Essential oils such as patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, lavender, and rose can help create feelings of peace and calm. Clary sage is especially helpful for women, while men tend toward sandalwood.

Oils that Create Feelings of Joy and Inspired Mood

Certain chemical compounds are found in some essential oils that have a direct effect on feelings of happiness. The citrus oils are high in these special monoterpenes and can be added to a love potion to enhance the joyful feelings of love!

Energizing Essential Oils:

Love requires energy! Some essential oils can stimulate passion and motivation. The spice oils are famous for this, notably cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and clove.

Aphrodisiac Essential Oils:

And finally the aphrodisiac essential oils! These can create and enhance feelings of attraction and love for couples. In fact, many rituals in various cultures include essential oils and scents in marital ceremonies!. Some of these essential oils include rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, and neroli. These are usually floral or spicy oils and are quite powerful. Only a few drops are needed, as too much can cause headache or nausea.

Also, cinnamon has been touted and also scientifically studied to be an aphrodisiac for men.

The scent of roses…. Rose oil is one of the most famous aphrodisiac scents in history

Two Synergy Blends for Love and Romance

I created two different blends for you, and this is because some of these essential oils are VERY expensive. Rose essential oil, for example, can cost upwards of over $1 to $3 for just ONE drop! Other precious florals, such as neroli, jasmine, and magnolia are similar in cost.

The first blend is for those who can’t or don’t want to spend a lot of money on their essential oils, but still make sure you’ve got a quality product.

NOTE: Please don’t buy essential oils from the grocery store or from a small distributor who may be buying cheap oils in bulk and reselling for incredibly low prices. You can find out more about making sure your essential oils are of quality in this article….and no, I’m NOT an essential oil distributor or seller. I’m non-brand specific.

When you make a synergy blend, you’ll want to store it in a small amber glass bottle. A 5 ml bottle will hold approximately 100 drops of oil, so you can decide how much you want to make.

A Safety Note: Be sure you do your research on any contraindications the essential oils may have for you or your partner. When diluted properly, essential oils are generally very safe for most populations. However, be sure to research. You can find out more in my book, The Ultimate Essential Oil Safety Reference Guide.

Here’s the first blend that’s the most cost effective for you to make and still have great results:

Love Potion Number One

15 drops orange essential oil (Citrus x sinensis)

7 drops cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) Bark or leaf is fine, although the leaf is safer for topical use.

5 drops sandalwood essential oil (Santalum paniculatum)

5 drops ylang ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata)

3 drops patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin)

3 drops rose (expensive) OR geranium (nicely priced) essential oil (Respective Latin names: Rosa x damascena OR Pelargonium graveolens)

NOTE on geranium versus rose essential oil: Both are wonderful for soothing and improving the skin. Rose smells like…rose! And it’s lovely for the emotions. Geranium works nearly as well, and has rose-scented overtones. It’s not as clearly beautiful as the rose essential oil, but really it does a great job!

Combine your essential oils in a small amber glass bottle with a dropper top, and store in a cool, dark place.

Love Potion Number Two

This is the pricier option, and it’s filled with amazing essential oils. Honestly, though, I still love that first one above almost as much! Here you go:

25 drops orange essential oil (Citrus x sinensis)

15 drops sandalwood essential oil (Santalum paniculatum)

5 drops rose essential oil (Rosa x damascena)

5 drops jasmine essential oil (Jasminum grandiflorum)

5 drops ylang ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata)

5 drops lemon essential oil (Citrus limon)

5 drops vanilla essential oil (Vanilla planifolia)

5 drops cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

5 drops patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin)

As you can see, this recipe is much more intricate and complex, requiring a greater variety of essential oils… It’s truly lovely, but again, that first one is a winner, too!

How to Use Your Homemade Love Potion Essential Oil Synergy

There are many ways to use this concentrated blend! First of all, though, do NOT use this blend “neat,” or undiluted on your skin. Some of the essential oils are sensitizing, and some people might have reactions. Diluting properly is a BIG deal and very important to do.

A general guideline for diluting in a carrier oil is to use 3 to 6 drops per tablespoon of a carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond oil. This is between a 1% and 2% dilution.

You may also want to do a patch test. This means you can dab a bit of the diluted blend on the inside of your wrist and wait a few hours. If you have a reaction, then don’t use the blend.

Now, on to the many ways you can use this blend:

1) Diffusing:

Diffusing essential oils into a room in your home can make a profound difference in the energy and mood of the room. Go from tired and worn out to feeling excited and seductive in just a few moments! Use the number of drops specified by the diffuser manufacturer, and enjoy some magic! I really love this high quality diffuser, and I have several of them now.

2) Massage Oil:

It’s easy to make a beautiful massage blend! For an all over massage oil, stick with a 1% dilution or even lower. This means about 3 to 6 drops per ounce of carrier oil. If you’re planning to massage smaller areas of the body, a 2% dilution (up to 12 drops) may be suitable and smell stronger. If strong scents bother you, stick with lower dilutions.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Be sure to keep essential oils away from sensitive body areas! This includes the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, armpits, groin, and genitals.

3) Perfume Yourself

Make a beautiful spray using about 22 drops in a 2 ounce bottle. Combine the oils with 2 tbsp of 151 proof alcohol or higher and fill to the shoulder with distilled water. Be sure to shake well before use. Mist over your clothing and hair. Keep away from eyes.

You can also make a roller bottle blend for small pulse point areas, such as behind the neck, wrists, between your breasts, etc. Use 10 drops of the blend in a 10 ml roller bottle. Fill to the shoulder with carrier oil. I prefer jojoba for roller bottles.

Final Thoughts on Making a DIY Love Potion

Using essential oils for practical matters like love is not only fun…it really can be helpful for whipping up some romance!

And…these kinds of beauty and romance blends make excellent gifts for friends, too.
