Why Herbalists Need a Village and How to Find Yours: The Confident Herbalist Tribe
This article explains what the Confident Herbalist Tribe is. It’s more than a membership. It’s more than a community. It’s more than a course. It’s a way to grow into the herbalist you were meant to be. Founded and created seven years ago by clinical herbalist and professional level aromatherapist, Heidi Villegas, to bring real community (a village) to the Christian herbalism education world, it’s become both a standalone learning area as well as a massively helpful mentorship resource for experienced and aspiring herbalists all over the world.
Let’s find out what a learning community with a vault of resources can do for you!
Why All Herbalists Need a Village, a Tribe
If you’ve been learning about herbs for any length of time, you already know how exciting it can feel at first.
You buy a few herbs. You make some herbal tea blends and some helpful salves that actually work! You start noticing plantain in the yard, dandelion near the garden, yarrow along the road, and all those jars of kitchen spices you already use every day.
This is the FUN part! Suddenly, the plants around you don’t look quite the same anymore.
They look useful, and you start asking, “Could this plant be medicinal?” This is where your herbal mind blossoms into all the possibilities! God has created plant medicine ALL around us, and we have it right at our fingertips.
But then, after the excitement settles in, another realization often follows. And it causes most of us some discomfort! There’s a LOT to learn.
There are so many herbs, so many preparations, so many safety considerations, so many opinions, and so many different ways to do things. One person says to use an herb one way. Another person says something completely different. One book makes herbalism sound simple, while another makes you feel like you need a science degree before making a cup of tea.
And before long, what started out as exciting can begin to feel a little confusing and, at times, overwhelming. Many people give up at this point, and here at Healing Harvest Homestead and within the walls of the School of Botanical Arts & Sciences, our mission is to get an active, competent, and confident practicing herbalist with a real apothecary at hand into every extended family.
It’s a ministry.
That’s one of the main reasons I created the Confident Herbalist Tribe nearly seven years ago. It started with a tiny community of about 100 excited students and just one herbal book with videos….our first plant masterclass. I’m incredibly grateful that these women raised their hands and helped me get started then supported the group on our way. Most of them are still with us today and are now very experienced practicing herbalists and aromatherapists!
I wanted a place where people could keep learning herbalism in a way that is practical, succinct, while still being in-depth, useful, and supportive. I wanted a place where students and participants could ask questions, learn from researched materials, watch helpful videos, attend live sessions, listen to replays, and be part of a REAL herbal community.
Because herbalism is a beautiful path, but you were never meant to walk it alone.
This is a 5-day FREE Herbal Foundations course, in case you’re a beginner to herbalism. It’s a great way to get some knowledge under your belt and begin making some remedies quickly, too.
What Is the Confident Herbalist Tribe?
The Confident Herbalist Tribe is an online herbal membership community through Healing Harvest Homestead, and is the premium growth experience inside the School of Botanical Arts & Sciences (SOBAS). It was created for people who want to become safer, more competent, more creative, and more confident with medicinal herbs and essential oils, with information that is based on a perspective of God, the creator of our plant medicine.
Inside the Tribe, you’ll find a large library of herbal education, including plant masterclasses, videos, printable books, text lessons, formulations, materia medica, phytochemistry, foraging information, plant identification, growing and harvesting guidance, live chats, Q&A sessions, special lesson series, plant discussions, searchable replays, transcripts, and community support….and MORE.
That sounds like a lot, because it IS a lot. But the goal is not to overwhelm you. The goal is to give you a rich place to learn from, return to, and use in the way that best fits your life and learning style.
Some people love to read. Some people need videos. Some people learn best by showing up live and asking questions. Others need to watch replays later because life is full. Inside the Tribe, you have options, and that matters because we don’t all learn the same way.
The Tribe is not just a pile of information. It is a learning home, a community, and a support system for your herbal path.
The Confident Herbalist Tribe is truly your herbalism village filled with like-minded friends who can support you on your individual path.
Who Is the Confident Herbalist Tribe For?
The Tribe is for the person who wants to learn herbalism in a real and useful way.
It’s for the woman who wants to care for her family more naturally but doesn't want to guess. It’s for the mom or grandmother who wants to know what to reach for when someone has a scratchy throat, a butterfly stomach, a minor scrape, dry skin, sleeplessness, seasonal discomforts, or everyday health needs that can often be supported at home.
It’s for the person who is experiencing chronic health issues and has realized that modern medicine doesn’t always “heal” these situations, and that herbal medicine is an excellent choice for supporting the body in attaining balance….and improved health.
It’s for the person who already has herbs in the cupboard but doesn't always know what to do with them.
It’s for the person who has tried to learn from books, blogs, YouTube videos, social media posts, and random online searches, only to feel like she has pieces of information scattered everywhere, and much of it conflicts with each other. Random learning gives you random practice.
It’s also for the person who has already taken herbal courses and wants mentorship, a self-guided path to practice for real life needs, a vibrant and engaged community, and help thinking through real-life situations and formulations.
And yes, beginners are welcome.
You don’t need a perfect apothecary, and you don’t need a big garden. You also don’t need to know fifty herbs before joining. You definitely don’t need to have your jars beautifully labeled and your notebooks organized. Goodness, if that were required, most of us would be in trouble.
You can begin right where you are.
Learning herbalism allows you to share with others, to leave a valuable legacy for your children and grandchildren, and makes your family less dependent when it comes to health! The Confident Herbalist Tribe is the perfect support system for you.
Why Join the Tribe?
One of the biggest reasons to join the Confident Herbalist Tribe is that herbalism can become confusing very quickly when you’re trying to learn it alone.
You may have a shelf full of books, but still wonder what to actually do when someone in your family needs support. You’ve probably tried wading through all your herbal resources, your past course materials, or asking in a Facebook group. But you’ve gotten nowhere.
You may have dried herbs in jars, but not know whether to make a tea, tincture, oil, salve, syrup, poultice, bath, steam, or something else entirely. You may know an herb is “good for” something, but not understand the deeper why behind it.
That “why” matters.
It helps you become more than a recipe follower. It helps you become someone who can think through a situation with more clarity. What is happening in the body? What kind of support is needed? Which plant makes sense? Which preparation is best? Are there safety concerns? Is this a situation for home care, or is it time to get medical help?
That kind of thinking is part of becoming a real home herbalist.
The Tribe helps you develop that kind of thinking through researched materials, plant masterclasses, live teaching, replays, questions, discussion, and the shared experience of others who are walking this same path.
The Confident Herbalist Tribe gives you a cohesive place to obtain answers from hundreds of students who have probably experienced what you are dealing with and can provide guidance based on their own studies, growth, and past needs plus work with clients. It’s a RICH place to learn.
Where Does the Tribe Take Place?
The Tribe is online, which means you can participate from home.
And I actually love that, because home is where most herbalism happens. Most of us are not making remedies in a fancy classroom. We’re making them in our kitchens, at the counter, next to the sink, with jars, oils, herbs, honey, vinegar, labels, and maybe a little mess.
We’re drying herbs wherever we can find space. We’re straining infused oils. We’re making teas before bed. We’re filling little jars of salve. We’re looking through our cupboards and realizing we already have useful plants right under our noses.
So it makes sense to learn herbalism from home, in a way that fits into the life you already have.
You can watch a replay with a cup of tea. You can read a lesson at the kitchen table. You can attend a live chat when YOUR schedule allows. You can search the community or replay library when you’re trying to find something specific. You can learn in the middle of real life, which is exactly where your herbal skills will be used.
When Does Learning Happen Inside the Tribe?
Learning happens all the time inside the Tribe because it is an ongoing experience, not a one-time class you finish and forget.
Most students are busy! They have jobs, family to take care of, and a big life. Like myself when I chose to invest in my herbal education around twenty years ago, I did it in the margins of my life. Those little moments when I could get to my course materials and learn just one new thing a day. And that education builds.
Within the Confident Herbalist Tribe, students are learning all the time, whenever they can, whatever time zone they’re in. We’re an international school, and we have students from all over the world, which makes the experience even richer!
There are live chats, Q&A sessions, plant deep dives, special herbalism and aromatherapy sessions, and new or growing resources added over time. There are also hundreds of past replays available, so even if you join today, you are not starting with an empty room.
That’s important because herbalism is not really a “learn it once and you’re done” kind of subject. Your questions change as you learn more. Your family’s needs change. The seasons change. Your confidence changes as you actually start making and using herbal preparations.
Something you did not understand six months ago may suddenly make perfect sense after watching a class, asking a question, making a remedy, and seeing how it works in real life.
That’s why access to ongoing learning and support is so valuable. You can keep coming back, keep practicing, keep asking, and keep becoming more capable.
How Does the Tribe Work?
Inside the Tribe, you can choose a path that fits the kind of herbalist you want to become.
The Success Paths, also called Herbal Pilgrimages, include the Family Herbalist, Community Herbalist, Outdoor Herbalist, and Kitchen Herbalist paths. These are not certification programs, but they are helpful ways to organize your learning and give yourself a sense of direction within the massive amount of course material inside. These paths are suitable for beginner to intermediate herbalists.
Maybe you want to focus on your family first. Maybe you want to learn herbs through working with culinary herbs and spices. Perhaps you feel drawn to the outdoors, foraging, growing, harvesting, and getting to know the plants around you. And it’s very likely that you want to serve your community more deeply over time.
Or just perhaps you want to create your own unique path with all that’s inside.
That’s one of the things everyone loves about the Confident Herbalist Tribe.
Youre not forced into one narrow way of learning. You can follow a path, study by body system, work seasonally, go alphabetically through plant masterclasses, attend live sessions, watch replays, or search for what you need when you need it.
This makes the Tribe helpful for different kinds of learners and different seasons of life.
What Will You Find Inside the Tribe?
Inside the Confident Herbalist Tribe, you’ll find a LOT of resources, and they fall into a few main categories: community, course materials, plant masterclasses, videos, live events, replays, special sessions, and specialty courses. These have all been initiated and grown over time inside the container that is the Confident Herbalist Tribe (CHT).
The community is one of the most important parts. This is where you can ask questions, share what you’re learning, talk with other herbal students, and know you have help and mentorship. NOTE: The community is considered a bonus, and we do have strong community guidelines. This makes it a VERY safe place for those learning herbalism.
And honestly, that is a big deal.
I’ve been in student groups that were not helpful. Many of us have. You ask a question and nobody answers. Or the group is inactive. Or there is no real guidance. Or you’re left with ten different opinions and no clarity at all.
The Tribe is different.
It is active, supportive, and full of people who are learning, practicing, making things, asking good questions, sharing their valuable experiences, and helping each other along the way. There is real fellowship there, and for many people, that alone is worth the investment.
The Community: A Real Herbal Village
This is where herbalism becomes more than something you just read about. It becomes something you talk about, practice, troubleshoot, and share with others. You can ask questions about herbs, preparations, safety, recipes, growing, harvesting, formulation, family wellness, aromatherapy, and more.
You may see someone share a remedy they made, a question about a plant, an idea for a salve, a concern about safety, or a situation they are trying to think through. Sometimes another person’s question will help you just as much as your own.
That’s how community learning works.
You learn from the teaching, yes, of course! But you also learn from the questions, conversations, experiences, successes, and even the “Well, that didn’t quite work the way I expected” moments.
And that’s real life.
Course Materials, Texts, and Videos
The Tribe includes course-style materials for people who want to keep learning in an organized and useful way.
There are written materials for those who like to read and study. There are videos for those who need to see and hear the teaching. There are printable books inside the plant masterclasses, and many of these are substantial resources you can return to again and again.
This matters because a quick recipe is not the same as real herbal education.
A recipe can be helpful, of course. I love a good recipe. But if you want to become a confident herbalist, you need to understand the plants, the preparations, the body, the safety issues, and the reasoning behind the choices.
Inside the Tribe, you can learn about materia medica, phytochemistry, formulation, medicine making, plant identification, growing, harvesting, foraging, aromatherapy, essential oils, and practical ways to use herbs at home.
And because the materials are available inside the platform, you can return to them whenever you need a refresher. That’s especially helpful because most of us don’t learn something deeply the very first time we hear it.
We need to revisit it, practice the methods, and apply them. Then do it all again.
Plant Masterclasses
One of the biggest treasures inside the Tribe is the collection of plant and aromatic masterclasses.
These are deep dives into specific herbs and their essential oils, and they include both videos and printable books. The books include researched information, formulations, protocols, remedies, materia medica, phytochemistry, foraging, plant identification, growing and harvesting information, and more.
This is one of the reasons the Tribe is so useful whether you’re just beginning or are more experienced.
If you’re newer to herbalism, a plant masterclass helps you get to know one herb more fully. You can learn what it is, how it has been used, what parts are used, what preparations make sense, what safety considerations matter, and how a home herbalist might actually work with it.
If you are more experienced, the deeper research helps you think more carefully about formulation, energetics, chemistry, preparations, and practical application.
This is where plants stop being random names on a list.
They become familiar friends. And once a plant becomes familiar, you are much more likely to actually use it.
Live Events, Q&A Sessions, and Replays
The live events are another major part of the Tribe, and students love them.
Inside, you’ll find live chats where you can ask questions and learn in real time. These may include Q&A sessions, plant chats, plant deep dives, special herbalism sessions, aromatherapy topics, formulation discussions, energetics, phytochemistry, advanced medicine-making, and other topics that help you grow in your practice.
Live teaching is helpful because herbalism has nuance.
Sometimes a question cannot be answered well with a quick sentence. Sometimes we need to think through the person, the plant, the preparation, the situation, the safety concerns, and the goal. That kind of conversation is easier when you have access to real teaching and the ability to ask questions.
But life is full, and not everyone can attend live.
That’s why the replays matter so much.
The Tribe includes hundreds of searchable replays, many with transcripts, so you can go back and learn from past Q&A sessions, plant chats, and special lessons whenever you need them. This turns the replay library into a HUGE resource, because you are not limited only to what happens after you join.
You get the benefit of years of teaching and questions.
And that is incredibly valuable, and there’s no other herbal membership like this.
Our plant masterclasses focus on medicinal plants, most of which are VERY easy to forage, grow, or access in most shops. From adaptogens to pain relievers; nootropics (for the brain) to the musculoskeletal system; illnesses and the immune system; digestive health to mental and emotional needs….and MORE—we discuss it inside the Tribe. NOTE: We do not provide medical advice, as we’re not doctors (although we have a couple of these and other medical professionals inside!).
Specialty Courses and Extra Learning
Another wonderful part of the Tribe is that it includes access to specialty courses and workshops inside the school in addition to all the plant and aromatic masterclasses.
These may include topics such as animal herbalism and aromatherapy foundations, botanical skincare, making botanical gifts, herbal tea, herbal medicine making, the immune system, Healing Herbs of the Bible, cacao, sourdough, and lots more.
I love this because herbalism touches so many parts of life.
It’s not just about “take this herb for that problem.” It’s about cooking, making, growing, preparing, caring, learning, observing, and using what God has given us in practical ways.
Some people come into herbalism through tea. Others come through skincare. Others come through family wellness, preparedness, aromatherapy, gardening, or even wanting to make gifts for loved ones. These extra courses give you more ways to use what you’re learning and bring herbalism into everyday life.
And everyday life is where this matters most.
Why This Kind of Herbal Support Matters
Every extended family would benefit from having at least one person who understands herbs and natural health in a safe, competent, and practical way.
Someone in the family who understands herbal medicine and can practice it safely, effectively, and responsibly is so valuable in these days of high medicine prices and 5 minute doctor visits. Most importantly, an educated person knows when a visit to a medical professional is necessary, and then can provide herbal supports.
Knowledge of herbal medicine gives families greater health freedom and options for care.
There are many everyday situations where herbal knowledge can be incredibly useful. A child needs comfort. Someone has a minor skin irritation. A cough starts going around. Sleep is off. Digestion is unhappy. Stress is high. The seasons change, and you want to be prepared rather than scrambling.
When you know how to use herbs wisely, you are absolutely less dependent on the medical system.
You begin to see that your kitchen, garden, pantry, and apothecary can become part of how you care for your family and friends. You learn what is appropriate for home care and what is not. You learn to ask better questions. You learn to think like an herbalist instead of just grabbing random products and hoping for the best.
That’s a powerful shift.
What Makes the Tribe Different?
The Confident Herbalist Tribe is different because it’s not just content, and it’s not just community. It’s the perfect combination of both.
You get researched herbal education, videos, printable materials, live sessions, replays, transcripts, plant masterclasses, specialty courses, and an active group of people learning alongside you. You also get the benefit of mentorship and guidance from people who are actually practicing herbalism and aromatherapy.
That combination is not easy to find. And, if you do find it, it’s expensive. The Confident Herbalist Tribe is an affordable way to enjoy community and coursework.
Many courses give you information, but no place to ask questions. Some communities give you conversation, but very little structure or trustworthy teaching. Some programs are so academic they feel dry and disconnected from real life, while others are so casual they lack the depth needed for safe practice.
The Tribe brings together education, experience, community, and practical application.
And it does this from a Healing Harvest Homestead perspective: grounded, useful, respectful, safety-minded, and rooted in the belief that plants are part of God’s good provision for us.
What I Hope You Gain Inside the Tribe
The CHT (Confident Herbalist Tribe) helps you become the herbalist you are meant to be.
Not a perfect herbalist. Not a know-it-all herbalist. Not someone who feels pressure to memorize everything or make every remedy under the sun.
I mean a real herbalist.
REAL herbalists:
Keep learning.
Ask good questions.
Knows that plants are powerful and useful—-and therefore safety and wisdom matter.
Think through formulations and create based on a real human’s needs.
Know their scope of practice and work within this frame.
My hope for you is that:
You trust your ability to learn herbalism, and we can help.
That your herbs and essential oils stop sitting unused on your shelves.
That you’ll make things your family will actually use, and even share with others!
You feel less alone on your herbal learning path and much more supported.
And that your home apothecary becomes something living, growing, practical and useful for you and yours.
And…that you remember that you don’t have to learn herbalism in a day. In fact, you can’t. It’s a process, and we’re all here for that!
How to Join the Confident Herbalist Tribe
When you join the Confident Herbalist Tribe, you receive access to the membership area, community, available course materials, plant masterclasses, videos, live events, replays, transcripts, specialty courses, and the growing library of herbal education inside the platform. Everything!
Once you’re inside, you can begin in the way that makes the most sense for you. You might choose one of the Herbal Pilgrimage paths, such as Family Herbalist, Community Herbalist, Outdoor Herbalist, or Kitchen Herbalist. You might start with a plant masterclass. You might attend a live chat. You might watch a replay on a topic you’ve been wondering about.
You don’t have to do everything at once.
In fact, please don’t.
Herbalism is best learned by actually working with the plants and experiencing what they can do!
Choose one plant, one lesson, one preparation, or one question, and begin there. Then keep going. That’s how your confidence grows.
Final Thoughts
The Confident Herbalist Tribe was created and exists because learning herbalism alone can be hard, and it doesn’t need to be that way.
You can have good teaching. You can have a real community. You can have access to researched materials, videos, printable books, live Q&A sessions, plant chats, replays, transcripts, special courses, and people who understand why this path matters to you.
You can learn how to use herbs safely and effectively for yourself, your family, and maybe even your community one day. You can grow your skills without trying to piece everything together from random places. You can become more prepared, more thoughtful, and more confident with the plants God has given us.
If you’ve been wanting a true herbal learning home base, I would love to welcome you into the Confident Herbalist Tribe.
You don’t have to have it all figured out before you join.
That’s what the Tribe is for.
